Commissioner's administrative files, 1960-1972.

The Dept. of Public Health protects the health of Commonwealth residents by maintaining state health facilities, regulating private health facilities, controlling disease, and regulating food, drugs, and other consumer products. The department is headed by the commissioner of public health, who maintains these administrative files. Files document the functions of the department, daily activities of the commissioner, and constituent concerns. Subseries are organized by color code as follows: (boxes 1-8, 12, 33-34) orange--interdepartmental excepting Bureau of Health Services (boxes 9-11, 32) red--interdepartmental for Bureau of Health Services (boxes 12-21, 31-32) purple--intrastate nongovernmental agencies (box 22) green--interstate health agencies (boxes 23-26, 34-35) blue--intrastate government agencies (boxes 22, 36) brown--federal agencies (chiefly Dept. of Health, Education, and Welfare) (boxes 27-30, 34) yellow--memorandums on meetings of the Public Health Council.

St 1869, c 420 established the State Board of Health and Vital Statistics, generally known as the State Board of Health.
